Company history

SDILasers is an independent business division of a Klydon (Pty) Ltd, formerly known as Scientific Development and Integration (SDI). SDI started its operations in May 1998, and its mainstream technologies were laser technology as well as isotope and gas separation. Due to the growth of the company, SDI recently separated into two divisions, namely SDILasers and Klydon, focusing on laser technology and isotope separation technology respectively.

SDI Offices

Over the last 10 years SDILasers has designed, developed, and manufactured a range of advanced high repetition rate transversely excited (TE) CO2 lasers as well as several other unique laser systems. However, the experience of a vast majority of the personnel dates back to 1980 at the then Atomic energy Corporation of South Africa (AEC), where this technology was used in the development of laser-based isotope enrichment processes. As a result, SDILasers’ personnel possess a vast amount of experience and skills in basic laser technology, as well as specialized skills in fields such as:
  1. High power laser systems
  2. CO2 laser modelling and design
  3. HV switching networks
  4. Optics
  5. High pressure CO2 lasers
SDILasers currently employs 21 full-time personnel, with personnel from Klydon engaged on a part-time basis as the need arises.

Its offices and laboratories (about 500m2) are situated on the premises of the CSIR in Pretoria, South Africa, and include 4 fully equipped laboratories and 5 areas for laser assembly. The laboratories and assembly areas are equipped with the necessary services to handle high power lasers and other experimental work. The location also gives access to the facilities and services of the CSIR, including the National Laser Centre.
